SPICER MAKES 19 TO NATIONAL YOUTH AND AGE NATIONALS 2012

At the Midland Open Water Championships at Bosworth Water Park Jake Spicer claimed the 16yrs 1750m Midland title and booked his place at the National Open Water Championships in Sheffield later this month. Jake became the 19th individual to achieve his national qualifying performance. Also at the Midland Championships there were silvers for Ryan Gordan, Anna Zair and a bronze for Laura Tailor. In tough race conditions these swimmers put in great performances.

SECOND SILVER AT EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

After the success of the 4x100m Freestyle silver medal at the European Junior Swimming Championships on day 2, Harriet Cooper swam a great heat of the 50m Freestyle and qualified for her first Junior international individual semi final in which Harriet finished 14th. Later in the same session Harriet swam the freestyle leg of the 4x100m Medley team and brought the quartet home to a silver medal.

A great championships in which she can return to next season in the search for individual podium performances.

EUROPEAN JUNIOR SILVER MEDAL FOR COOPER

After narrowly missing out on a place in the Semi-finals of the 100m Freestyle on day one of the European Junior Championships, Harriet joined fellow GB team members to deliver a 55.9 on the third leg of the 4x100m Freestyle team to achieve a silver medal on day two.

With more individual events coming up Harriet hopes to convert this podium performance to her remaining events.

MORRISON AND BALLARD IN RECORD BREAKING FORM

Competing for the East Midlands School team at the inter-counties Championships in Liverpool Megan Morrison and Jack Warren Ballard set new English National records in the Junior 200m Breaststroke and Intermediate 200m Backstroke events. There was also podium finish for Elliot Tointon in the 200m and 400M Ind.medley. Candice Hall, Megan Morrison and Zoe Tildesley also achieved a podium finish in the relay events

COOPER AND THORPE DOUBLE UP AT ASA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

At the second Olympic trials 5 COLSC swimmers produced excellent unrested performances as they prepare for their end of season competitions. Harriet West, Megan Morrison and Jack Warren-Ballard swam close to their personal bests in the early morning heats against some of the best seniors in the country. Harriet Cooper in her final competition before the European Junior Championships produced a new personal best to make her first senior national final in the 50m Backstroke. Harriet also claimed a place in the 50m Freestyle final. Jamie Thorpe rediscovered his Butterfly form and produced fast early morning heat swims and swam close to his personal bests in the 50m and 100m Butterfly finals later in the evening sessions.

COLSC STORM LAST WEEKEND OF REGIONAL AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

COLSC completed their 2012 Midland Age Group Championships, more than doubling their medal count from the first weekend, finishing with a total of 24 medals. Swim of the weekend from the girls 4 x 100m relay, coming through from touching in 5th to take first place, holding off a good fight put in from City of Derby. Kieran Wheatley also swam well in the 13yrs 400m IM finishing in silver medal position and Harry Puffett consolidated weekend 1's swim improving in the 200m back and winning his first Midlands Medal in 3rd place boys 11yrs. Medalists: Girls 4x200FC A, Kieran Wheatley, Megan Morrison, Danielle Tomlinson, Girls 4 x 100m FC, Candice Hall, Molly Hey, Harry Puffett, Paige Rayner, Milly Scotchbrook, Girls 4 x 100m Medley A, Harriet West, Hannah Knight, Harriet Cooper.

WEST DOMINATES FIRST WEEKEND OF REGIONAL AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

COLSC made a solid start to the 2012 Midland Age Group Championships with Harriet West claiming four Championship titles. Overall nine swimmers competing in thirteen finals bought home a total of ten medals. Other stand out swims were from Megan Morrison, Hannah Knight, Ryan Gordon, Candice Hall, Kieran Wheatley and Simon Scully who all claimed further podium finishes. Finalists included Lewis Thickpenny, Joshua Munroe, Cameron Haley, Benjamin Black, Tom Ryan, Zoe Tildesley, Danielle Tomlinson, Paige Rayner and Harry Puffet who all achieved top 8 places in their individual events.

TRIO IMPRESS AT MARE NOSTRUM

Competing at the first leg of the Mare Nostrum tour in Barcelona COLSC swimmers Jamie Thorpe, Sophie Smith and Harriet Cooper displayed their international pedigree against swimmers from around the world. Racing tough whilst preparing for their end of season competitions Jamie claimed 3rd place in the Men's 50m Freestyle B finals. Harriet placed 7th in her first senior international in the Women's 50m Backstroke A final and 4th in the Women's 100m Backstroke B final. Sophie Smith placed 7th in the Women's 50m Freestyle A final and 3rd in Both the Women's 100m and 200m Freestyle B finals.

SIXTEEN NATIONAL QUALIFIERS AND COUNTING

During the Northampton Meet at Corby COLSC had three new names to add to the increasing number of swimmers attending this years National Age and Youth Championships. Over the course of the meet Kieran Wheatley (200m Breaststroke), Molly Hey (200m Butterfly) and Milly Scotchbrook (100m and 200m Breaststroke) added their names to a current total of sixteen swimmers. With final opportunities coming at the Regional Age Group Championships and Cardiff Meet during June COLSC could break twenty.

COLSC SWIMMERS JOIN OLYMPIANS ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY

With the London Olympics less than 100 days away, Jamie Thorpe, Sophie Smith and Harriet Cooper are preparing to race on the international circuit to gain valuable race practice ahead of their main events in July. With eyes firmly focused on the Games, these British swimmers will be looking to supplement their intensive training programmes with competition preparation.

Michael Scott, National Performance Director for British Swimming said: “The range of teams and individuals being supported from now until the end of the summer competition season will prepare our Olympians for peak performances at Games time. “At the same time it will also provide our Rio potential athletes with an opportunity to hone their skills and gain valuable experience in tough international environments such as the US Open Championships.”

The COLSC swimmers will feature at the Mare Nostrum series, in Barcelona during June.
