Thorpe and Smith join British squads as they target Internationals on the road to 2012 Jamie Thorpe and Sophie Smith will join Britain’s best swimmers as they all prepare for action on the international circuit as they supplement their intense early season training with race preparation ahead of the Olympic year. With eyes firmly focused on the British Gas Swimming Championships 2012 (Selection Trials) at the London Aquatics Centre in March, Jamie and Sophie have been working hard towards meeting the criteria for nomination to Team GB for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Jamie and Sophie will feature at the FINA World Cup with a team 44 athletes including Liam Tancock and Keri - Anne Payne representing the British Gas GBR Swimming Team at the Berlin, Germany leg (22-23 October). 2012 will start in Belgium for Jamie and Sophie as Great Britain send the World Class Development Programme to the Flanders Swimming Cup in Antwerp (14-15 January). |

Morrison claims City of Leicester's first National qualifying time of the new season COLSC travelled to Ponds Forge to compete in the Robin Hood Open Meet this month. The meet had tough competition, and City of Leicester managed to come away as 3rd top club, despite only having the youngest three squads racing! New Development swimmers Beth Humberstone, Olivia Morrison, Courtney Smith, James Davies, Tasha MacGilbert, Bradley Norton, Jacob Gill, Thomas Ryan, Szymon Psuik, Thomas Ryan, Nathan Burton and Yasmin Flint, along with Talent swimmer Cameron Haley represented COLSC for the first time and showed a real depth in potential in their first meet with the club. Megan Morrison got her (and the clubs) first national qualifying time for the 2011-2012 season in the 200m Breaststroke, an event in which she won a silver medal in the 2011 National Championships. Well done to all swimmers who competed, a great start to the season! |

Smith claims Commonwealth titleAfter being ruled out of the World Juniors in August due to ill health Sophie Smith returned to form to claim the 200m Ind Medley Commonwealth title in the Isle of Man. Over the three day event Sophies great early season speed helped her claim two gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Combing with her England team mates Sophie swam the Freestyle leg of the Medley team to secure her second gold in the final female event of the swimming.Individual medals also came in the 100m and 200m Freestyle events in new personal bests and the 4x100m Freestyle team. |

Cooper wins double gold at UK GamesHarriet Cooper made her first UK School Games appearance by striking gold in both of her events. Harriet representing England Central in Sheffield stormed to victory in the 50m freestyle final in 27.11. She then swam the fastest leg of her team's victorious 4x100m freestyle final. "I'm really pleased with how my racing went," said Cooper. "Going into it, I was really nervous because I haven't been in the pool for a while. "This is my first UK School Games so I was just going into it planning on doing my best."It's just been an amazing experience meeting all the different people from different areas and sports." |

Thorpe takes ASA National Youth Title At the recent ASA National Youth Championships in Sheffield Jamie Thorpe claimed his second career national title. Competing in the 17/18yrs 50m Freestyle Jamie lead from start to finish to take the gold medal in a new personal best and county record.Jamie also competed in the 17/18yrs 100m Freestyle and produced a new personal best to qualify for the Freestyle final where he finish 10th. |

Cooper's storming finish nets European Youth Olympic goldLeicestershire's Harriet Cooper stormed to gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey yesterday.The City of Leicester swimmer powered to victory in the 100 metres backstroke at Trabzon minutes after finishing fifth in the 50m freestyle.The 14-year-old trailed Russian Daria Ustinova for most of the final but finished strongly, touching home in a personal- best time of 1 minute 2.73 seconds.Cooper said "It makes me really proud to have won this gold medal for my country. It is just such an amazing feeling to be on the podium with the national anthem ringing out." |
